Ways to Stay Healthy During the Holidays

Holiday illness can stem from stress related causes, but it can also cause stress as well.  (Let’s just say that say that it’s not exactly relaxing to attend your kid’s school’s holiday variety show when you have to get up every ten seconds to blow your nose).  Here are some tips to keep your body healthy.

  1. Vitamins. There are a million things to do during the holiday season, from sneaking off to buy gifts, to baking cookies, to cleaning house for your annual holiday party.  One great way to keep your inner system balanced is to take vitamins.  Echinacea is good for keeping your immune system boosted.

  2. Anti-bacterial liquid. Keep an anti-bacterial liquid, such as Purel, in your car, purse, pocket, wherever.  Germs run amuck this time of year, and you can help prevent colds and other illnesses from entering your system by keeping your hands clean.

  3. Sleep. Believe it or not, sleep is important to your over-all health. If you are having trouble sleeping this time of year due to stress, consider laying off the sugar and caffeine (as yummy as they are, peppermint mochas can be an enemy this time of year).

  4. Lay off the booze. While a few drinks one night may postpone any holiday stress you are feeling, it will not help you cope with stress in the long run.  Alcohol is a depressant, which can make you feel blue, and alcohol also dehydrates your system, which can make you more prone to illness.  There is nothing wrong with a few holiday drinks here and there, but don’t use it as a cure for holiday stress.

Priorities and Perspective

Which is more important: staying up all night to hand make individual holiday cards for your mailman, hairdresser, and dog walker, and developing a cold that makes you unable to enable to attend your favorite holiday party, or signing a pack of purchased holiday cards and attending the party in good health.  You know the answer, but it can be tough to remember the answer during the holiday season.  Remember, you are not required to turn into a Superhero during the holidays.  Prioritize, and you will enjoy the holiday season more.
